The description
Kirin's Hyoketsu line of shochu highballs, or chuhai, has this new offering. Shiikwasaa sugar free with 7% spirits, soda, and shiikwasaa citrus juice.
The good
Every summer, I keep a lookout for shiikwasaa flavored drinks, whether flat or sparkling, alcohol-free or not. The shiikwasaa, a type of lime from Okinawa, has a great balance of tart, sweet, and bitter flavors reminiscent of limes. Hyoketsu sugar-free shiikwasaa's label doesn't identify the drink as a high ball. See the bottom of the can where it says spirits, essentially shochu. I didn't miss any sweetener, and the citrus flavor really carries it. It's nice, crisp, and sparkling, and great over ice.
The not so good
Not much to it. This is simply a ready-to-drink can version of a shochu highball. You could just squeeze some fresh shiikwasaa and mix it with soda water and some shochu. It's kind of like a mojito but without the rum or mint. I guess the idea is that the drink will appeal to people because of the colors on the label, the cheap price, and the convenience of the ready-to-drink can. And sure, the citrus fruit can be hard to come by and a bit expensive, depending on your region. You could probably mix it cheaper at home.
