The good
You'll see many products labeled as 限定 - gentei, meaning limited - on store shelves in all seasons. This time, I was tempted to try something new, and Suntory's Horoyoi brand of ready-to-drink shochu highballs caught my eye. The drink was first released in 2023 in Taiwan. The label describes it as Mizore Mango. It's a nod to the Taiwanese summer dessert, shaved ice with mango. The can design has a tiled background and the message, "Was a hit in Taiwan". The canned chuhai has low alcohol content at 3%, but delivers on mango flavour. It's lightly sweet, umami, and
The not so good
Horoyoi Mizore Mango is pretty good and a cheap, low alcohol drink to sip at gatherings. The 350 ml canned drink is under 150 yen at supermarkets. It's got a good umami flavour of mango. A good mango is something to sink your teeth into with spicy, almost meaty notes. I love me my mangos when they're in season. The drink captures some of that complex flavour. I recommend popping this drink in the freezer for about 10 minutes. The Taiwanese treat is mango over "snowflake" shaved ice. "Horoyoi" means tipsy, but this is not so boozy to make you wobbly.
