The description
Kirin's Hyoketsu line of shochu highballs, or chuhai, has this limited-time offering. Shio Lichi has 5% spirits and is made with imported lychee fruit and salt.
The good
Every summer, I look forward to the salty lychee flat drink (the non-alcohol version) sold in shops and from vending machines. The lychee has a subtle flavor and with the added salt, the lychee drink replenishes your electrolytes and rehydrates you. Kirin's Hyoketsu line of shochu highballs, "chuhai" came out with Shio Lichi, Salt Lychee, in summer 2024. The drink is available for a limited time. The floral aroma and sweet flavor of the lychee comes through. The salt is a nice contrast, bringing out the fruit's flavor.
The not so good
Kirin's Hyoketsu Shio Lichi is kind of nice, not too sweet, and the salt enhances the fruit's flavor. It's pretty good, and a nice alternative to the ubiquitous citrus-flavored chuhais available year round. The spirits don't overwhelm the lychee's floral aroma and delicate flavor. The salt enhances the flavor, too. I'm a big fan of lychee fruit widely grown in China and Southeast Asia. I was surprised to read in the ingredients list that the lychee in this drink is sourced from South Africa. The drink is a limited-time product, so get it now while it's hot. Double entendre there!
