The good
Even though the vernal equinox is past and the first winds of spring, the haru-ichiban, have arrived in the Kanto region, it's still cold. I crave soup and other warming dishes. This serving of soup with vegetables, chicken meatballs & ginger available at 7-11 convenience stores in their deli section looked like a good bet. It's made with ogon shoga, golden ginger. The ginger is noted for both its sharp flavor and color. After grating, it retains its golden hue. The soup is warming and has a few meatballs in it.
The not so good
This convenience store soup with chicken meatballs flavored with golden ginger is a bit expensive at 310 yen. I had to try it once, but will likely make soup from scratch next time I need something to stave off the early spring chill. The ginger flavor was good, the meatballs juicy, and the soup is packed with shiitake, some veggies, and kombu. But I found it very salty. A look at the7-11 product page reveals that while the soup is only 116 calories, it's laden with salt - 2.9 grams?! Maybe not for people on low-sodium diets.
