The description

Yakiimo cream daifuku is a 7-11 treat in the Seven Sweets product line. It's a round, palm-sized mochi rice cake filled with yakiimo paste and whipped cream.

The good

When you visit the chilled sweets section of your neighborhood 7-11, you may see The Seven Sweets, a line of single treats at reasonable prices. A few weeks ago, I got a limited-time version, a matcha daifuku made with Sayama tea from Saitama Prefecture. It was lovely - astringent tea with sweetened mochi and cream. So when I spotted the yakiimo cream daifuku I had to give it a try. 7-11's website describes this sweet-potato paste filled treat as a fusion of Japanese and western confectionery - with whipped cream in it.

The not so good

If you're a yakiimo fan, this might tempt you. It's a mildly sweet treat with a lot of yakiimo paste and whipped cream filling. The flavor is pretty subtle. Honestly, I think I was spoiled by the matcha cream daifuku which is fragrant, astringent, and richly tea-flavored. Maybe I just don't appreciate yakiimo. Maybe it's a little bland. It's a little sloppy to eat as the mochi is quite soft and the copious filling is gooey. The treat appeared in 7-11 convenience stores in mid December 2023. I'm looking forward to seeing the next version of The Seven Sweets.
