The description
NewDays convenience store's large rice ball - ookina onigiri is filled with sake and okaka, salmon and bonito flakes. It's available at Newdays locations in Tokyo and parts of Tohoku.
The good
On the concourses of JR line train stations, you see a different selection of shops than Japan's shopping streets. One example is NewDays, a convenience store and kiosk chain. JR runs NewDays, a part of the company's retail arm. The sales rival 7-11. Train riders are a captive market. I got an ookina onigiri stuffed with salmon and okaka, umami-laden katsuo flakes seasoned with soy sauce. The ookina onigiri is hefty. The snack helped me make it from late afternoon to dinner time. It was priced at 167 yen.
The not so good
Remember when a heavy onigiri the size of your fist cost only 100 yen? Those days are gone with rising inflation. At 167 yen this onigiri is the size I remember standard onigiri used to be. The ookina onigiri sake okaka has great flavor, so I'm not complaining about the quality. It's pretty satisfying. I could have packed some onigiri for my trip, but food safety on a hot day could be an issue. Note that NewDays' cashless payment awards points on some days of the week. JRE Points cards have campaigns with points awards some days of the week.
