The description

Japan’s go-to luxury chocolatier takes on the challenge of adding some pizzaz to one of Japan’s staple snacks, the melonpan, and isn’t really able to rise to the challenge in my eyes. Worth a try, perhaps.

The good

“The good” is that I can sometimes find melonpan to be a little bland and dry so it’s always nice to see efforts that try to bring something a little different to the party. I also like chocolate and usually can’t afford to buy chocolate with the name Godiva on the packet. I can stretch to 200 yen or so for a snack every now and then, so this melonpan puts Godiva chocolate within reach. The chocolate is nice - rich and sweet - and the chocolate chips are a nice touch as well as being in plentiful supply. The melonpan is, melonpan. No different from the standard melonpan you might have eaten many times before. The combination filled me up.

The not so good

“The bad” is that this teaming-up of two classics just doesn’t result in the excitement that the prospect might present. Ultimately, if like me, you can find melonpan to be a bit crumbly and dry, the injection of Godiva chocolate doesn’t really do anything to address this. It adds heaviness rather than any sense of light or moisture, as you might get with some of the cream or custard-filled melonpan. Perhaps creamier chocolate, and more of it, might have helped. I appreciated the attempt at something different though.
