The description

Dumbbell set that comes with four plates (of two different weights), a bar, and stoppers such that you can mix and match weights to suit your needs. I bought two sets - one for each arm. I think “s.a. gear” is the home brand of sports store chain, Sports Authority.

The good

While my training needs currently don’t call for a wide range of weight classes and types I have limited budget and so was looking to buy dumbbells that could accommodate a variety of weights, rather than having to stock up on a bunch of different dumbbells. In this regard then, I’m very happy with this set I bought from a Sports Authority. In other areas of performance I can have no great complaints. Even though they are of the mix-n-match type I’ve had no problems with stoppers coming loose or plates moving around. In terms of comfort in the hold or grip, well, I use gloves anyway so I’ve no real issues with the palms of my hand becoming sore. I’m assuming that I can buy extra or differing plates when the time comes that I want to add more weight.

The not so good

I suppose the main irritant that comes to mind with these Sports Authority dumbbells is that the rubber seal in the stoppers often sticks to the plates when changing weights. It’s easy enough to put it back in place though. Compared to more modern-style dumbbells which have rubber or rubber-covered weights these things are noisy when they come together and in no way can they be dropped to the floor in a Japanese apartment. Of course, the changing of weights is a bit of a hassle but I knew that coming into the purchase so can’t really complain about that. 5,000 yen for one set seems like a lot of money to me but then I don’t really have much to compare it to as I’m new to training with weights like this at home. Too early to comment on general wear and tear as I’ve only been using these weights since January 2021.
