The description
I bought this donut (with an iced coffee) at one of my local Tully’s cafes. The soft 7-grain sugar donut (or ふんわり7穀のシュガードーナツ in Japanese) cost 325 yen, including tax.
The good
If you happen to be at Tully’s and hankering after a mild-flavored sweet to go with your beverage of choice, then this could be the donut for you. The soft (fluffy) 7-grain donut may not be an exciting treat, but it is enjoyable and seems to pair quite well with a range of drinks. Mild really is the key word to describe it. The donut is dusted in sugar, but the 7 grains from which it is made add an earthier taste than most donuts tend to have and this makes it feel a bit more filling as well. Notably, despite the grains, it still feels soft and fluffy to eat.
The not so good
The only, quite minor issue I had with this donut was the mess from the powdered sugar. It’s best eaten while sitting down, with a plate on hand. If I could, I would give this a solid 3 and a half stars rather than the full four. There is nothing wrong with this donut! It’s just not particularly exciting, and I honestly only chose it because I wanted a sweet with my coffee, it seemed a bit early to try out the cake range, and the other available sweets were not that appealing. It’s a solid sweet, but unremarkable, and for all the “7 different grains!!!”, there are similar options readily available elsewhere that would be equally enjoyable.
