The description The Saint Etoile bakery/cafe at one of my local train stations is one of those places I walk past quite frequent without paying it a whole lot of attention. Recently, however, something did catch my eye, and that is the Fuwa Fuwa Edamame Cheese Bread, aka ふわふわ枝豆チーズパン.
The good
This bread/roll is pretty much exactly what I personally look for when I'm seeking to have some cheese bread. The bread itself is nice, moist, and duly fluffy as per its name, but it's also filling enough to be a more than satisfactory snack. The cheese is on top of the bread and the flavour is mild with a discernible texture but nothing sticky. It doesn't overpower the edamame, either, the beans themselves adding a nice textural element and their own distinct flavour. Having a protein-filled vegetable in my bread like that makes me feel virtuous, however limited the quantity of beans actually is. Finally, while I believe bacon has an important place in the world, I like that this bread has not snuck some in so as to produce flavour, a pretty common happening in cheese bread around here.
The not so good
Personally, I don't really have any objections. Yes, I'm quite a satisfied customer. More hardcore cheese lovers than myself might find the cheese flavour a bit too mild, but for me it was ideal. I wouldn't say this is a negative point so much as a thing to bear in mind, and that is the distinct possibility that this is a seasonal offering. I will be honestly surprised if this is still around when Saint Etoile transitions to their autumn menu; if you like the sound of the fuwa fuwa edamame cheese bread, then I suggest you get in while you can!
