The description

This is the latest version of Fujiya’s Look A La Mode chocolate bar. I picked it up for 198 yen plus tax, taking it to about 213 yen overall. While I bought it at my local drug store, these are pretty ubiquitous and you can find them in many grocery and convenience stores. Each pack contains12 chocolates, 3 pieces each in one of the four featured flavours.

The good

Fujiya’s Look A La Mode chocolate bars have been around for years, and they always feature a selection of four soft-centered milk chocolates. Every now and then, one flavour gets taken out and quietly replaced with another. For example, I feel like the banana flavour has been there all along and the strawberry as well, but the pineapple has come and gone and the raspberry is definitely new to the the current line-up. I quite enjoyed all the flavours here, however, and I’d love to see raspberry and pineapple get picked up a bit more by other confectioners.

The not so good

As nice as those fruit flavours are, I think they might be a bit much when all together like this. When eating the chocolates, they start to feel a bit similar before long, and they aren’t all that distinct from one another. While they are all pleasant in themselves, they really deserve something else in there with them to offset the sweet tartness. I personally liked Look A La Mode when coffee and/or caramel, were part of the group, just because they added definite variety. It feels a bit unfair to call out how much the price has gone up on these, since most chocolate prices have gone up considerably in recent times. Still, I think it is worth noting that this isn’t really one of the cheapest chocolates available, and while I like it well enough, I’m probably not going to go out of my way to get it unless I have a particular hankering for one.
