The description
This tart comes from Fujiya, the cake and confectionary makers, but it is currently being sold at 7-11 convenience stores. The チョコレートタルト costs 208 yen before tax, and about 224/225 yen after.
The good
Chocolate sweets tend to be a little less common during the summer months in Japan, so it is nice to see this chocolate tart still available well into July in the chilled sweets fridge at my local convenience store. It has a firm-enough chocolate biscuit base with what seems like vanilla glazing, and the filling is “chocolate mousse” cream. It is rich in flavour, managing to avoid being bland without being overly sweet. Instead. the cocoa taste is strong in both the base and the mousse cream filling.
The not so good
Aside from successfully avoiding some of the shortcomings that similar sweets encounter, this isn’t an especially unique treat. However, it isn’t really trying to be anything but what it is, a nice chocolate tart, and it does that very well. I’m not sure if it’s popular or if its days in the limited time seasonal shelf are numbered, because I can’t always get one lately. Given summer is definitely underway now, there’s every chance that it is the latter. If it sound appealing to you, I recommend seeking it out sooner rather than later!
