The description
The 7-11’s ever evolving cold sweets range continues to evolve. The Cake, Chocolate and Whipped Cream (チョコ名前サンド, the choco-nama-sando) appeared about a month ago and continues to be on the shelves. It retails for 190 yen, 205 yen after tax.
The good
If you are looking for a chilled chocolate treat that isn’t quite frozen, then this could well be the treat for you. Basically, it’s a cool, summer version of the choco sand/pie biscuits that are around year-round in the sweets sections of any given supermarket or convenience store. It’s quite well done. The chocolate is thin and crisp, and you can bite into easily without it shattering. The flavour of the chocolate is quite strong but still leaves plenty of room for the vanilla cream to shine, and the cake part is lightly and fluffy. It’s a very nice combination and both enjoyable and (alarmingly!) easy to eat.
The not so good
If I could, I would give this a solid 4.5 stars. As it is, I’m left to choose between 4 and 5 stars and I’m erring toward 4. This treat is very good at what it does, providing a quick, simple and satisfying summer chocolate sweet, but it isn’t super-exciting. While I am quite impressed by the chocolate shell texture, I don’t know that it’s rewriting any recipe books. It’s a good, solid snack, and I’m happily going to buy it again while it’s available, even if I’m probably not otherwise writing home about it.
