The description

A range of chilled soups appeared in the 7-11 recently, presumably for the summer. One of them is this, Cold Minestrone (冷たいミネストローネ). It costs 178 yen, or 192 yen after tax.

The good

While the English name of this soup doesn’t make it sound that appealing, it actually does reflect what it is quite nicely - a chilled version of the Japanese version of minestrone soup. It comes ready to serve in its packet, and all you need to do is tip it into a bowl and you’re sorted. In keeping with the whole theme of convenience, it even has instructions on the back for heating up the soup if you change your mind about eating it chilled! I found the tomato flavour rich and savory, and it was complemented nicely by flavours you typically find in chilled tomato soups/gazpacho such as garlic and onion. The vegetables in the soup are cut finely, and on the whole, it’s a makes for a pretty decent part of a meal, particularly on a hot day when hot food options are not that attractive.

The not so good

It is probably best to bear in mind that this is a soup from a convenience store. Fresher versions purchased elsewhere would likely be tastier, and healthier as well. However, for what it is, it is actually very nice, and the price tag is pretty attractive as well. While I’m not going to eat/drink it everyday, I can see myself enjoying it again during the hot summer months. Paired with a sandwich or a salad, it makes for a pleasant, light lunch, and I am interested in trying the other soups in the range as well!
