Chocolate Gift Ideas for Valentine’s Day 2023

The most common gift for Valentine’s Day is chocolate, so every year in January all the chocolate makers come up with special Valentine’s Day editions. In most department stores across Japan you can find a special section dedicated Valentine's chocolate. As there is so much variety it can be hard to choose.

I tried Valentine’s boxes from 3 different chocolate makers that I will introduce in this post. Hopefully it makes your choice a little easier.

Pokémon Chocolate from Mary’s Chocolate

Mary’s Chocolate have a collaboration with Pokémon this year. They created 5 different boxes based on Bulbasaur, Charmander, Mew, Squirtle and Pikachu as well as a bigger box with several Pokémon.

The smaller boxes are 1,300 yen each (except for Mew which is 1,500 yen) for 6 chocolates and a cute metallic box . The chocolate flavors and designs are based on optic features and attacks of the respective Pokémon.

I tried the Pikachu and Bulbasaur chocolate and all tasted very good. Once you are done with the chocolate you can use the box for the storage of small items. I think every Pokémon fan will be happy to receive of these chocolates. Currently, they are sold out at the online shop but you might be lucky to find them in a department store in Japan that is selling Mary’s Chocolate.

Kanmigaro from Goncharoff

Goncharoff is my favorite chocolate maker because their chocolates are cute, taste good and are reasonably priced. This year they have a collection for Valentine's Day based on famous Japanese works of art with chocolates that look like traditional Japanese sweets.

You can order these chocolates from the official Goncharoff online shop as well as from amazon, Rakuten and in department stores that sell Goncharoff chocolate.

Boxes of several sizes are available. The two boxes in the photo are 1,080 yen each for 5 different chocolates. The chocolates are very cute and each one has a different flavor. I think this size is ideal as you can eat the whole box without having to feel too guilty about the calories. These boxes are without chocolates with alcohol but some of the bigger boxes do contain those with alcohol-based flavors.

Valentine’s Chocolate from Bonoir Kyoto

The Valentine’s Day collection from Bonoir Kyoto has chocolates with flower motifs and traditional Japanese motifs. They use flavors like matcha, yuzu and white peach. The chocolates tasted very good and have an esthetic quality. I especially liked the white ones. This chocolate is perfect for everyone who likes traditional Japanese flavors.

Several boxes of different sizes are available. The box in the photo costs around 1,000 yen. You can order it from the Takashimaya online shop or buy it in the chocolate section of department stores in Japan. In the case of the store where I bought these Bonoir Kyoto chocolates, most of the bigger boxes were sold out and only few of the smaller ones were left.

Did you any of the chocolates above catch your interest? If you plan to buy Valentine’s chocolate, you should not wait too long as the popular editions sell out fast. I hope you have a nice Valentine’s Day.

The Goncharoff chocolates modeled after traditional sweets are intriguing! And the price is accessible. Do you have a link to that selection?
