Shrine records estimate that Fudatenjin-Shrine was built some 1,940 years ago. One of the most renowned ancient temples in the Tama region of Tokyo, Fudatenjin-Shrine is also famous for being mentioned in the legal code of the Heian period, Engishiki.

The shrine was moved to its present location during the Muromachi period, at which time the deity Sukunabikona-no-Mikoto was enshrined there and it was dedicated to the worship of Sugawara no Michizane.

Fudatenjin-Shrine is known as a place to receive blessings for academic and commercial success, while the shrine's main hall, Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s list of prohibitions, and the guardian dog statues (the oldest in the city) are all designated cultural properties of Chofu.

An event is held on the 25th of each month where vendors line up along the approach to the shine. It is a favorite among Chofu residents, who know it as the “Tenjin Market."

In vol.5 of Hakaba Kitaro (Kitaro of the Graveyard), "The Weird One," Kitaro is said to live in the forest behind Fudatenjin-Shrine.
