Shrine of the Thousand-year Wisteria

Kokuryo-jinja Shrine photo

Kokuryo-jinja Shrine can be found in the Kokuryocho 1-chome neighborhood of Chofu City.

The former Kokuryo-jinja Shrine was built on the site of Shinmei-sha Shrine, and the two were combined under the name Kokuryo when a new main building was built.

The sacred tree at Kokuryo-jinja Shrine is a wisteria that is thought to be four or five hundred years old. It’s called the Thousand-year Wisteria, and Kokuryo is also known as the Shrine of the Thousand-year Wisteria.

This enormous wisteria was also selected as one of the Eight Views of Chofu. It is said to confer blessings of prosperity on one’s descendants.

The branches spread out across a wisteria trellis some 400 square meters in size and at a height of about four meters. Gorgeous light purple flowers bloom across the entire trellis between late April and May every year. The Kokuryo Thousand-year Wisteria Festival is held around the time when the flowers are in full bloom.
