Kitaro Square

Shigeru Mizuki was a famous manga artist best known for GeGeGe no Kitaro, Kappa no Sanpei, and Televi-Kun. Mizuki was made an honorary citizen of Chofu, having lived here for over fifty years.

Kitaro Square was established in 2019, four years after Mizuki's passing, to commemorate Chofu as ”Mizuki Manga’s birthplace."

The park is full of art objects representing yokai and other characters that appear in GeGeGe no Kitaro as well as those from Mizuki’s other works, making it a beloved destination for fans of his work both within Chofu City and beyond.

Development of Kitaro Square was supported by the donations of countless people who took advantage of Japan’s Hometown Tax system to crowdfund the park.

There’s a Nurikabe climbing wall, Ittan-momen bench, Kitaro’s house, and other delightful objects that allow you to immerse yourself in the world of Mizuki’s manga. Definitely worth a visit.
