Chofu Civic Culture Festival

Experience a world of traditional culture in Chofu City during the Rugby World Cup


During the Rugby World Cup visitors to Chofu City are welcomed with a Fanzone and public viewing areas in and around the city’s station-front hiroba (square) where local and international foods can be enjoyed. 


During the period of Rugby World Cup events in Chofu, the “Chofu Civic Culture Festival” will be held at the following venues near to the Fanzone: Chofu City Green Hall, Chofu City Cultural Hall Tazukuri, and in front of Chofu City Hall. 


At the Chofu Civic Culture Festival visitors have the chance to enjoy examples of traditional Japanese culture, starting with folk dance, ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), and shodo (calligraphy).

Witness performances of Japanese folk dances from regions across Japan. Other examples of Japanese culture can be enjoyed here which include kimono, music and dance.

Experience the traditional art of Japan: Expressing the beauty of flowers, leaves and branches through an exhibition of ikebana


Ikebana is one of the traditional art forms of Japan, involving the arrangement of plants, flowers and other materials. 


Standing in front of the displays of flowers at the exhibition visitors will get a sense of Japanese aesthetics delivered through feelings of calm, peace and beauty.

Pieces of Japanese art: Exhibition of shodo works


Shodo is a kind of Japanese calligraphy in which kanji and kana characters are drawn with the use of traditional writing tools of brush and ink. 


From the shading of the drawn characters and the overall arrangement of each piece, viewers can get a sense of the culture of Japanese art.

Experience the culture of ‘omotenashi’ through Japanese tea ceremony


Sado (tea ceremony), also known as “cha no yu,” is the act of serving customers tea in traditional style.


Through a combination of tea house and garden, and traditional Japanese confectionery, visitors can experience a fusion of Japanese arts and hospitality.

Culture festival bringing together booths that offer a variety of cultural experiences


The “Culture Festival” takes place as part of the Chofu Civic Culture Festival, bringing together experiences that include ikebana, technical arts, go and shogi (traditional Japanese board games). 


The Culture Festival will also offer special on-stage performances and displays of food and drink that reflect the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese matsuri (festival).
