Mushakoji Saneatsu Memorial Museum and Saneatsu Park

See a variety of displays showcasing the achievements of Saneatsu Mushakoji

Saneatsu Mushakoji was the pivotal figure in the publication of the literary magazine Shirakaba, leaving us with a broad body of work between the Meiji and Showa eras that includes literature, arts, and philosophy.

Mushakoji spent his later years in Chofu, residing here for two decades until his death at the age of 90.

After his death, a park was opened on the grounds of his former home. The Mushakoji Saneatsu Memorial Museum was later opened next to the park in celebration of his achievements.

The Museum endeavors to explain the many achievements of Mushakoji as simply as possible.  Exhibits are rotated eight times a year in order to make as much of his collection as possible available to visitors. Special exhibits are held in the spring and autumn as well.

Saneatsu Park is full of flowering trees like plum, magnolia kobus, cherry, hydrangea, and camellia along with irises and wild grasses growing in Musashino. The leaves turn beautiful colors in fall, making it a delightful destination in all seasons.

The upper pond is fed by a natural spring, while carp swim in the lower pond. Many wild birds are attracted to the area as well.

If you’re lucky, you’ll get a chance to see the golden algae bloom between May and September.
