Tokyo Metro Handy Safty Guide

With recent natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, typhoons and floods in Japan, it is even more important to prepare well for such situations that are not uncommon in Japan. From time to time the local city office is publishing a safety guide pamphlet, even for foreigners, for dealing with those situations.

Unfortunately those city office information are mostly general information in how to deal with natural catastrophe, when you are at work or in a building. Even so many buildings and facilites nowadays are designed to be quake resistant, there is still always a risk, that something can happen.  To just stay inside a building might be the safest place, but what should you do, if you are in a train in case of an earthquake or taifun? First of stay calm! Especially earthquakes are not that rare, that´s why trains usually will stop automatically in such a case.

The Tokyo Metro has published its own small pamphlet in English, Korean and Chinese called “Handy Safety Guide”.  The guide tells you everything about what to do in a case of an earthquake, typhoon and sudden fire breaks out. All is very easy to understand and illustrated (lucky not in a Manga style like so often), which makes it helpful for foreigners even if you don´t understand the language.

The pamphlet also tells you about the train manners and to watch out dangerous behavior on the plattform like bumping suddenly into somebody or try to catch the train, when the doors are closing.

You can find that pamphlet at every Tokyo Metro Station at their Information corner or just ask the ticket counter staff for it.

I think it is a really helpful and easy to understand pamphlet, which gives you all the information you will need in a very short way. You can also find information sources, which will be very helpful in an emergency. Of course all the information will also work out for other train lines like the JR.
