International human solidarity day

The 20th of December annually is human solidarity day. It is one of the official United Nations "international days". It was established just 20 years ago, in December 2005. It came 5 years after the United Nations established the Millennium Development Goals, which includes a goal to eradicate poverty.

Humanitarian solidarity is

a collective commitment, based on shared humanity, to support people in crisis. It requires empathy, mutual aid, and coordinated action. As a society we need to move beyond mere sentiment to practical help .

In the current world climate, strengthening international solidarity is as important as ever. Hopefully on International Humanitarian Solidarity day people will think about what they can do to promote a culture of solidarity and a spirit of sharing. Moreover, consider what practical things we can do to  fight poverty.
