Celebrating Japan's public bathhouses

Celebrating Japan's public bathhouses photo

Today, and October 10th annually, is Sento Day 銭湯の日 in Japan. A day dedicated to Japan's public bathhouses. The date of the anniversary was chosen because October 10th, 10/10, can be read as "Sen (10) and to (10)".

While private bathrooms are now common in homes across Japan, sento once played an essential role in everyday life, providing a place where people could bathe, relax, and connect with their local community. Although often confused with onsen, sento typically use heated tap water rather than natural hot spring water. Their appeal lies not in their water source, but in their role as accessible community spaces.

Even today, several neighborhood sento remain open, offering a glimpse into a long-standing aspect of Japanese culture. Visitors can enjoy large communal baths, distinctive bathhouse architecture, and a slower pace that encourages relaxation. Some sento preserve classic features such as Mount Fuji murals, wooden shoe lockers, and traditional noren curtains at the entrance.

Have you been to a sento recently?
