Raw Sweets Day in Japan

Today, and June 12th annually, is Raw Sweets Day ロースイーツの日 in Japan. It was established by Café Holo i Mua, a shop in Nishinomiya (Hyogo) known for offering beautifully crafted raw sweets and raw ice cream. The date comes from a simple bit of wordplay of 6/10: “raw (6) swe (1) ets (2)".

Raw sweets are made without heating the ingredients, allowing their natural nutrients and enzymes to remain intact. They avoid common allergens such as wheat, refined sugar, eggs, and dairy, relying instead on nuts, fruits, and other plant‑based ingredients. For families with children who have allergies, raw sweets offer a way to enjoy birthday cakes and holiday treats together without worry.

The café created this anniversary with the hope of raising awareness so that raw sweets become easier to find and enjoy anywhere in Japan. They also sell their cakes online, making them accessible to people around Japan.
