A day for Mustard Greens

Mustard Greens are the nutrient-dense, edible leaves of the mustard plant (Brassica juncea). Belonging to the cruciferous family alongside nappa cabbage and rapeseed and canola. In Japan, Komatsuna and Katsuona are also closely related.

Today, and July 7th annually, is Mustard Greens Day 高菜の日 (Takana no hi) in Japan. The anniversary was created by the All Japan Pickles Cooperative Federation, an organization made up of pickle cooperatives, manufacturers, and wholesalers across the country. The date comes from a playful word connection: na(7)ppa and takana(7) , both containing the number seven, making 7/7 a memorable choice for promoting this traditional vegetable.

The purpose of the day is to expand awareness and demand for takana, which is widely grown across western Japan and known as an overwintering leafy green.  Its origins trace back to Central Asia, traveling along the Silk Road before reaching Japan. Today, takana appears in beloved dishes such as takana fried rice, takana onigiri, and the famous Aso specialty takana‑meshi, and it remains a favorite topping for tonkotsu ramen.
