A Day for All the Beautiful Bridges in Japan

I've always had a soft spot for bridges in Japan. There are so many beautiful ones (pictured one of my favorites in Saitama Prefecture). That's why I really appreciate Bridge Day 橋の日 (Hashi no Hi), a commemoration of August 4th in Japan. The date comes from a simple wordplay. August 4th, 8/4, can be read as "ha (8) shi (4)" (the Japanese for bridge), but the meaning behind the day is far richer.

The celebration began in 1986, when Toshihiko Yuasa, then working for a bridge construction company, proposed the idea. The Miyazaki “Bridge Day” Executive Committee formally established it, aiming to nurture love for local rivers and the bridges that span them, while also encouraging river conservation efforts. The first Bridge Day event was held in Nobeoka City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and from there the movement spread across Japan.

Activities have included creating a “Bridge Day Song,” hosting local celebrations, and organizing long-running road‑cleaning campaigns that earned national recognition. By 2015, Bridge Day was observed in all 47 prefectures, receiving the Anniversary Culture Distinguished Service Award from the Japan Anniversary Association for its cultural impact.
