A Day to a Luxurious Delicacy - Japan Caviar Day

Today, and September 15th annually, is Japan Caviar Day 日本のキャビアの日. The anniversary was created by Japan Caviar Co. Ltd, a leading producer of fully aged domestic caviar based in Miyazaki City. The date of the commemoration was chosen because mid-September marks the peak season for caviar production in Japan.

Caviar is made from salted sturgeon roe. It has long been known worldwide as a rare luxury food enjoyed by European nobility and royalty. Japan’s own caviar story began in 1983, when 200 sturgeon were gifted from the former Soviet Union, sparking decades of research in Miyazaki Prefecture. After 30 years of effort, “Miyazaki Caviar 1983” was born in 2013, later served at G7 summits and international first‑class cabins, becoming Japan’s first domestically produced caviar exported overseas.

Japan Caviar Day aims to share the flavor, versatility, and cultural value of Japanese caviar with a wider audience, while honoring the sturgeon; an ancient fish symbolizing longevity and vitality.
