Places in TOKYO that you can visit for free on Greenery Day

May 4th is Greenery Day みどりの日 in Japan. It is a public holiday nationwide, one of a group of public holidays known as Golden Week. On this day, several places around Japan offer free entry to certain public facilities. But Tokyo in particular is known for it, because of a Tokyo Metropolitan Government policy.

Tokyo designates Greenery Day as free admission day for all Tokyo Metropolitan zoos and gardens. Below, 12 places that are free in on Greenery Day in Tokyo.

According to the Tokyo Zoological Park Society, the following four facilities are free in on Greenery Day:

  1. Ueno Zoo
  2. Tama Zoo
  3. Inokashira Zoo
  4. Kasai Rinkai Aquarium

In addition, according to its official website, the following aquarium is also free in:

5. Tokyo Sea Life Park

The following gardens are also free in on Greenery Day

6. Shinjuku Gyoen

7. Hama-rikyu Gardens

8. Koishikawa Botanical Garden

9. Rikugien

10. Kyu-Iwasaki House & Gardens

11. Kyu-Furukawa Gardens
12. Tonogayato Garden

It is absolutely fantastic that these major zoos and gardens offer free admission on Greenery Day, but at a price, so to speak! They will be busier than ever, particularly the zoos and aquariums, as many people take advantage of the rare chance to enter for free. But if you don't mind crowds, and you'd like to save a few hundred-yen, Greenery Day is a good day to visit. However, for the record, all 12 places on this list are very reasonably priced all year round.
