A celebration of the things that make life feel like yours
Today, and April 3rd annually, is Hobby Day 趣味の日 (Shumi no ni) in Japan. It is a lighthearted yet meaningful reminder to make space for the activities that bring joy, curiosity, and a sense of identity.
April 3rd was chosen as the date of "Hobby Day" because 4/3 can be read as "shu (4) mi (3)", the Japanese for hobby. The anniversary was created by Sideriver, a company that supports lifestyle and hobby culture, the day encourages people to rediscover passions that may have been pushed aside by work or routine. Whether it’s crafting, reading, gardening, photography, camping, or something entirely niche, or entirely Japanese (cherry blossom hunting!), hobbies offer a refuge where time slows and the mind resets.
"Hobby Day" gently reminds us that joy is not a luxury; it is a sustaining force. By giving ourselves permission to enjoy what we love, we enrich not only our days but also our sense of self.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
