How to Manage Perspiration in Japan’s Overbearing Summer
One of the anniversaries of July 8th annually is Sweat Management Day 汗マネジメントの日 in Japan. It piqued my interest having just written about how I hope to embrace the heat this year! Moreover, 'sweat management' is an absolute essential consideration if you are planning to spend time in Japan this summer.
For people who haven’t lived here, it’s hard to grasp just how relentless Japan’s summer heat can be. You might think you handle hot weather well if you come from a country with strong summers, but unless you’re used to real humidity, Japan’s heat has a way of stifling you. It’s not just hot - it’s heavy, clingy, and constant. It's the kind of heat that wraps around you the moment you step outside. Perspiring is part and parcel of Japan's summer and learning how to manage it becomes essential if you want to stay comfortable.
Start with layered prevention: apply deodorant before leaving the house, keep sweat wipes handy for quick resets, and use a handy fan to reduce humidity around the skin. Choose breathable fabrics like cotton or linen and avoid tight synthetic layers that trap heat. For commutes, carry a small towel and hydrate regularly: sweat is part of your body’s cooling system, not an enemy.
Mandom, the company who created "Sweat Management Day", have researched sweat glands and body odor, and their advice for people who are concerned about odor is that gentle cleansing, quick clothing changes and breathable shoes can make a big difference. Overall, with a little planning, summer sweat doesn’t have to overwhelm you the way Japan’s summer heat does.
