The description
The brand new Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks, which has had a full relaunch and complete reformulation for Starbucks Japan's 30th anniversary campaign, "Why not coffee?"
The good
On taste alone, I did not notice much of a difference between the new Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks Japan and the old Caramel Macchiato. And the only difference I did notice was for the worse - see negative features paragraph. I got some information online about the change though. Apparently the product has had a complete reformulation for the 30 year anniversary of the coffee chain in Japan. For example, the caramel sauce recipe has been upgraded reportedly. Also, the old vanilla syrup has been replaced with a supposedly improved new vanilla bean flavored syrup. They also claim that there is a better balance with deep-roast espresso.
The not so good
As above, the only difference I noticed is that there is much less cream on top than before. I used to like eating the top of the macchiato with a spoon - delicious spoons of cream and caramel! However, with the macchiato I got today, which was the tall size for the record, it was not possible to do that as there was not enough cream. Other than that, nothing really stood out to me. However, I should note that I do not have Starbucks very often and I don't get the same order every time, so I am certainly no expert on their macchiato. Maybe someone who is a regular at Starbucks and / or an avid fan of macchiato may notice more of a difference between the new and old version.
