The first payday

Today, and April 25th annually, is First Payday / First Salary Day ファーストペイデー・初任給の日 in Japan. It highlights the milestone of graduates receiving their very first paycheck at a new company. For some, their very first paycheck ever.

Because numerous companies pay April wages around the 25th of the month, this date has naturally become associated with the excitement, relief and symbolism of earning one's first income as a full-fledged member of employed society. The first salary carries meaning far beyond the number printed on the payslip. It represents a shift from being supported by family to standing on one's won.

In Japan, many people use their first paycheck to express gratitude, particularly to their parents. Its quite common for people to buy their parents a present or bring them out for a meal. It has become a cultural shorthand for "thank you for raising me". First Pay Day is a ultimately a celebration of beginnings, financial independence and responsibility.

I always gave my first salary from every new job to my parents in an envelope with the logo of the company and my Dad keeps them all safe till today. I didn't know this was a cultural practice here in Japan too!
