A Day to Reflect on Organ Transplant

Today, and October 16th annually, is Green Ribbon Day in Japan. A commemoration day established by the Japan Organ Transplant Network. The date marks the enforcement of Japan’s Organ Transplant Law in 1997, and it also falls within Organ Transplant Promotion Month.
The green ribbon is an international symbol of transplant medicine. Green represents growth and new life, while the ribbon symbolizes the connection between organ donors and recipients. It serves as a reminder that organ donation can offer hope and a second chance to those awaiting transplants. A commemoration day encourages people to learn more about organ transplantation and to discuss their wishes with family members and loved ones.
Around Green Ribbon Day, landmarks and well-known buildings across Japan are illuminated in green to raise awareness of organ transplantation. Famous locations such as Tokyo Tower and the Sapporo TV Tower have taken part in these light-up events, helping to spread understanding and encourage conversations about life, donation, and the importance of making one's wishes known.
