Rough Diamond Day honoring Hidden Brilliance
Today, and April 22nd annually, is Rough Diamond Day ダイヤモンド原石の日 in Japan. Rough Diamond Day shines a light on the quiet beginning of every gemstone's journey - the unpolished, unassuming raw diamond.
The anniversary was created by a luxury jeweler based in Kobe known for handling diamonds from rough stone to final design. The date of the anniversary is twofold. One, April's birthstone is the diamond. Two, in the diamond industry, it's common to split a single rough stone into a pair for polishing and 22 is often used for all things twin! Hence, April 22nd was chosen for the date of "Rough Diamond Day".
The day not only honors the diamond but also encourages people to take a lesson from how diamonds are forged from rough stone. In English, we have a saying that sums it up "a diamond in the rough" - a person can grow and reach their full potential with care, skill and time.

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
