A day for coconuts in Japan
Due to the growing popularity of coconut products in Japan, Kirin Tropicana, a drinks company based in Tokyo, created Coconut Day ココナッツの日 to fall on May 7th annually. The reason for the date is because 5/7 can be read as "koko (5) na (7) tsu", the Japanese for "Coconut".
The purpose of the day is to promote coconut products, especially coconut water, which - no surprise - Kirin Tropicana manufactures! Kirin Tropicana is a partnership by the long-established American juice brand Tropicana, and Japan's super brand Kirin Beverage. Coconut Water is already popular overseas, but it is gaining recognition in Japan in recent years too.
Coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm. Japan's weather is not suitable for growing coconut palms that produce fruit. Most of the produce that requires coconuts as an ingredient import their coconuts from the Philippines. And I rarely see coconuts sold as fruit in Japan. Have you ever seen coconut in the fruit section of a supermarket?

Former nickname was "Saitama". Changed it to save confusion on place review posts! Irish, 20+ years in Japan! I also write on my personal website: insaitama.com
