A day for Miyazaki Mangoes

Today, and May 25th annually, is Miyazaki Mango Day みやざきマンゴーの日 in Japan. The anniversary was created to promote the rich, sweet, and famously high‑quality mangoes grown in Miyazaki Prefecture. The date of the anniversary comes from the way 5/25 can be read as “man (0) go (5)” and “ni (2) cori (5)” , which means smile, paired with the fact that late May marks the peak shipping season for Miyazaki’s perfectly ripened fruit.

The day was officially established in 2014 by the Miyazaki Fruit Promotion Council to boost national awareness of Miyazaki Kan‑juku Mango, known for its deep flavor and luxurious texture. Although cultivation began in 1985, Miyazaki mangoes only became widely recognized after 2007, when the prefecture gained national attention and the fruit’s reputation soared.

At the heart of this fame is the premium brand “Taiyō no Tamago” (“Egg of the Sun”). Only mangoes with a sugar content of 15° Brix or higher can earn this title, and even then, just about 15% of all harvested mangoes qualify. The highest‑grade AA fruit represents a mere 5%, making it exceptionally rare. Miyazaki Mango Day highlights this regional treasure and supports ongoing efforts to share its exceptional quality with the rest of Japan.
