Learning through travel - Tomi City is Known for its Grapes

At a stop on the expressway, at Tobu Yunomaru Service Area, I noticed that there was above average amount of grape produce and souvenirs. It is coming into grape season in Japan, so an increase in grape availability isn't a surprise, but I knew by the quantity at this service area, that there was more to it than them just being in season.

Sure enough, when I got home and researched it, I learned that one of the things Tomi City in Nagano is famous for is grapes. Specifically, Kyoho, the large‑berry Japanese variety known for its deep color and exceptional sweetness. Kyoho cultivation here dates back to pre‑war Japan, and Tomi has spent decades refining its techniques, building a communal shipping system, and maintaining strict quality standards.

It’s one of those regional facts that, if you’re not local, you might only discover by traveling: a small city in eastern Nagano producing some of Japan’s most impressive grapes. And a service area that does a great job of promoting that regional produce, with a fine selection of grape omiyage, including these fun and convenient grapes in a cup.
