Car Essentials for a Road Trip

A good road trip feels easy and relaxed, and having the right items in the car makes all the difference. Whether you’re driving through Japan’s landlocked prefectures, heading into the mountains, or navigating holiday traffic, a few simple essentials can turn a long journey into a smooth one. These are the things we’ve found genuinely useful on our last road trip during Obon.

Road Trip Essentials

  • Water: we always keep a few flasks on hand, especially in summer or long traffic jams.
  • Tissues: for runny noses and sneezes
  • Hand towels: for spills and for hand washing at public toilets without a hand-dryer
  • Hand wipes: Perfect for quick clean‑ups when you can’t reach a sink.
  • Cutlery: Handy for convenience‑store meals or food picked up at service areas.
  • Cups: Great for sharing drinks or making instant coffee at rest stops.
  • (Eco-friendly) Bags: For trash, recycling, or storing small items.
  • Snacks: Something easy to eat in the car such as crackers, fruit, or small sweets.
  • Fans (summer): A lifesaver in summer when the car heats up quickly.
  • Blanket (winter): For warmth, comfort, or even a quick nap at a rest area.
  • Portable loo (half‑joking, half‑serious!): We don't have one yet, but we are considering it! During periods like Obon and Golden Week, traffic can trap you between service areas for an hour or more. In the recent devastating floods in Chiba, people were trapped in cars for literally hours - one man said 12 hours.

Road trips don’t need much, just a few thoughtful items that keep everyone comfortable along the way. With water, wipes, snacks, and seasonal extras like fans or blankets, even long stretches of expressway feel manageable. And if you’ve ever been stuck in a highway traffic jam, you’ll understand why a portable loo suddenly feels like a brilliant idea. A little preparation goes a long way toward making every drive smoother, calmer, and more enjoyable.
