Sunflowers: Bringing the Sun When the Sky Won’t

I saw my first sunflowers of the 2026 season in the rain, today, Saturday July 4th. If you are lucky, you can see sunflowers as early as June in some places, but most places grow them to bloom in either July (usually late July) or August.

I love seeing sunflowers this early in summer. Even though the rainy season makes it hard to catch them in bright sunshine, they don’t seem bothered at all. Maybe they didn’t get the memo that it’s rainy season, or maybe they simply bloom without needing the sun. Either way, it’s a lovely contrast to see their bright blooms glowing against grey skies.

I associate sunflowers with hot days and seeing them today is a reminder that the post-rainy season heat is on the way. Have you seen any sunflowers in bloom yet this year?
