The Children's Charter in Japan

There is a Children's Charter 児童憲章 (Jidō kenshō) in Japan and it was created on this day, May 5th, in 1951. On this day, 236 representatives from across Japan gathered to draft a declaration that would guide how society protects and supports children. The declaration contains three core principles and twelve articles.

The three core principles are:

  1. Children must be respected as human beings
  2. Children must be valued as members of society
  3. Children must be raised in a good environment

Japan's declaration actually preceded the United Nations' Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which wasn't established until 1959. Kudos to Japan. Moreover, in Japan, it is not just a day, but the week from May 5th to 11th is designated as Children's Welfare Week 児童福祉週間 (Jidō fukushi shūkan)
