A simple reminder that could save a life this summer

I came across a TV segment this morning (TV Asahi Morning Show) that shared a very straightforward but important reminder about staying safe during Japan’s summer heat. The advice was simple: use your air conditioner before your room gets dangerously hot.

The graphic explained that it’s best to keep a thermometer in the room and switch on the AC once the temperature rises above 28°C. By the time your body starts to feel uncomfortable, the room may already be at a level where heatstroke becomes a real risk.

Another point they stressed was surprisingly direct: don’t turn the air conditioner off. During heatwaves, leaving it running is actually safer than cycling it on and off, especially for children, older adults, or anyone sensitive to heat.

Japan’s summers are getting hotter every year, and small habits like checking the room temperature and keeping the AC running can make a big difference. Sometimes the simplest advice is the most important.
