Hokkaido Exclusive Dice Caramel
Today, and October 9th annually, is Dice Caramel Day サイコロキャラメルの日 in Japan. It is a commemorative day marking the date that Meiji first released Dice Caramel (Saikoro Kyarameru) in Japan, in 1927. However, production ended in 2016, but the candy lives on as an Hokkaido exclusive sweet.
The day was established by Donan Foods Co., Ltd., a confectionery company based in Hakodate, Hokkaido. Its purpose is to encourage more people to enjoy and appreciate Hokkaido Dice Caramel, a product that carries on the legacy of the original sweet, including the distinctive packaging which resembles a dice. After Meiji ended production of Dice Caramel in 2016, responsibility for the product was transferred to Donan Foods.
In recognition of its cultural and nostalgic significance, Dice Caramel Day was officially certified and registered by the Japan Anniversary Association in 2017. Today, the observance celebrates the history and uniqueness of Hokkaido Dice Caramel.
