The description

One of the most popular Chilean wines in Japan? Saint Helena Alpaca is widely available, cheap, palatable red wine with mild fruit flavors and smooth finish.

The good

I haven't been a regular drinker in ten years, but recently I've started to drink again occasionally. This wine is ideal for an occasional drinker who doesn't want anything to rich or strong tasting. To put it simply: this wine is really easy to drink! Moreover, it doesn't leave an after taste. It also doesn't linger until morning. My brother in law actually introduced it to me and explained that you can buy it almost anywhere in Japan that sells alcohol - even convenience stores. And sure enough last night I was easily able to pick up a bottle at a local convenience store. Another really attractive point is that it is cheap, at just 493 yen for a 750 milliliter bottle. I've tasted red wine that's ten times the price that didn't taste quite as good!

The not so good

I personally don't have anything bad to say about this wine. If I had to imagine a negative of this wine product, perhaps for some it might be addictive? Because its so readily available, easy to drink and it tastes so good. As I said, I'm just trying to imagine possible downsides of it, but don't actually feel that way myself. The price is certainly a bonus in these times when everything is so expensive. Another potential negative is that maybe it sells out in stores regularly? I've only just started drinking it recently so its too early to say if this is a problem or not. At the convenience store last night there were three bottles in stock. I guess another negative feature is that you might be tempted to drink a whole bottle in one night! I only drank a couple of glasses last night, so I have the rest to look forward to tonight!

My ojisan loves the name and will demand "Arupaka!" for weekend chill-outs and leisurely dinners. It's cheap and consistently good.

@TonetoEdo only for my brother in law I'd probably never have heard of it! I'm glad he introduced me to it.
