The description

This Yamazaki Bakery product is a soft lemon sponge-like cake filled with bright Setouchi lemon cream and sweet milk cream. It has a refreshing citrus aroma.

The good

This "Lemon Special" by Yamazaki Bakery appealed to me with its summery appearance and I felt like lemon might be refreshing on a hot day. It didn't quite hit the mark, but it wasn't too bad either. I can't quite put my finger on what the sponge reminded me of. It didn't have a typical sponge taste. Not necessarily a bad thing. The lemon cream was good, not too tangy and it has a nice aroma. The milk flavored cream made from Hokkaido condensed milk was okay, but not as good as I had expected or hoped. But the balance was quite good.

The not so good

Despite its appealing concept, the Lemon Special has a few drawbacks that hold it back. The sponge cake, while soft, can feel slightly dry around the edges, especially if the product isn’t perfectly fresh. The lemon cream, though flavorful, leans toward a jam‑like texture that may feel too sticky for some, and the sweetness of the milk cream can overshadow the citrus instead of complementing it. While overall the balance was quite good, it got a bit repetitive after a few bites. As a bakery item it wasn't in the fridge, and I was eating it on the go so I didn't have time to chill it. I feel like it would have tasted better chilled. The sponge felt quite warm to taste which was off putting.
