Only in Japan - microwavable clear wrap / cellophane?

Last year when I was visiting my home country, I went to put something in the microwave with cellophane wrap around it, in front of my older sister. My sister looked panicked, yet amused, that I was about to put a plate with cellophane on it in the microwave. "What are you doing?" she exclaimed, "you can't put cellophane or wrap in the microwave?"

So, I asked around, and in my home country nobody uses cellophane or equivalent to wrap items that are going to go in the microwave. Moreover, when I did a Google search, I was horrified to learn that in Europe, it is widely believed you should never put wrap and / or cellophane in the microwave. So why did we use it in Japan? Well, it turns out that the cellophane in Japan, unlike in most other countries, is a premium type that is purposely made to be suitable for the microwave.

Japan has a wide range of microwavable wrapping options available, not just cellophane. And in Japan it is perfectly normal to use cellophane or other type of wrapping materials around food to be heated in the microwave. Is it the only country in the world where it is so widely used in the microwave? Do you know of any other countries that use cellophane and / or wrap when heating food in the microwave? I am genuinely curious!
