The World's Largest Wooden Seal (Stamp)

Given that today is Good Seal Day, I thought it as good a day as any to introduce this unique record-holder in my prefecture of Saitama. At Yakyu Inari Shrine in Higashimatsuyama stands what was recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's largest wooden seal or stamp.

Created on 21st May 2016, the enormous seal has a stamping surface measuring 1.69 square meters and stands 1.42 meters tall. While most Japanese seals are small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, this giant version dramatically showcases a tradition that has been part of Japanese life for centuries. Personal seals, known as hanko or inkan, are used for everything from official paperwork and business documents to commemorating special occasions. So, I am not surprised that there are large ones in existence.

The giant seal is displayed at the shrine and has become an unusual attraction for visitors. It also reflects the shrine's connection to local culture and craftsmanship. However, as it is behind glass, it is a little tricky to photograph on very sunny days. But if you happen to be exploring Higashimatsuyama, this record-breaking seal offers a fun photo opportunity and a chance to discover one of Saitama's more unusual claims to fame.
