A day for Shijimi Clams
Today, and April 23rd annually, is Shijimi Day シジミの日 in Japan. It celebrates the humble yet culturally significant shijimi clam, a small bivalve long valued in Japan for both its flavor and its health benefits. The date of the anniversary comes from a playful bit of "goroawase" (number pun) as 4/23 can be read as "shi (4) ji (2) mi (3)".
The anniversary was established by the Japan Shijimi Reserach Institute in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. They have spent many years studying and promoting the nutritional qualities of shijimi clams. Shijimi thrive in calm freshwater and brackish environments. One of Japan's most famous production areas is Lake Shinji which spans Matsue and Izumo. The lake is home to the country's only dedicated Shijimi Exhibition Hall, where you can learn about clam's ecology, culinary uses and long history in local life.
Rich in minerals and vitamins, shijimi have traditionally been praised for supporting liver function. For generations, people have said that a bowl of shijimi soup is the perfect remedy after drinking! Modern research continues to highlight its nutritional value. Shijimi Day shines a gentle spotlight on this small, but meaningful ingredient.
