Senior Citizen's Week in Japan

Today, and September 15th annually, is the start of Senior Citizen Week 老人週間 in Japan. It is observed from September 15th to 21st every year. September 15th is Senior Citizen's Day, which is not a public holiday, but Respect for the Aged Day is, and this year it happens to fall on the last day of "Senior Citizen Week". Which gives the week a nice rhythm. Starting with a quiet recognition and ending with a day to pause and appreciate our elders.

"Senior Citizen Week" is a nationwide campaign led by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, with 11 partner agencies and organizations. Together they promote respect for older adults, strengthen community support and encourage safe, healthy living among seniors.  Each year includes several key initiatives, of which the Centenarian Celebration Project is key. Under that project, the Prime Minister sends congratulatory letters and commemorative gifts to those turning 100 years old. This year she will be giving to more than 50,000 people. A mind-blowing statistic.

In 2026 a major focus of the week is the Residential Fire Prevention and Disaster Preparedness Campaign, running from September 1st to 21st. It highlights the high proportion of fire fatalities among seniors and encourages households to check smoke alarms, install seismic breakers, and use home fire‑safety equipment. You will also find that municipalities, welfare organizations, and cooperating companies also share posters, host awareness activities, and promote safer living environments for older adults during this week.
