Lakes with beaches and swimming
If you’re looking for lakes in Japan that offer a true beach experience - sandy shores, designated swimming zones, and a summer holiday atmosphere - the list is small but wonderfully rewarding. While many lakes prohibit swimming, a handful across Japan have proper beach-style areas where you can relax by the water.

Lake Biwa in Shiga is the best-known example, with several sandy beaches such as Ōmi-Maiko and Nagahama. These spots feel almost seaside, complete with clear water and long stretches of sand. Lake Inawashiro in Fukushima (pictured) also has wide, family-friendly beaches like Nagahama and Shidahama, perfect for swimming and picnics. Up north, Lake Tazawa in Akita offers a beautiful lakeside beach with brilliant blue water. It is one of the best, most beautiful and most popular lakes for swimming in Japan.

These lakes combine freshwater swimming with the comfort of a beach setting, making them ideal for families, casual swimmers, and anyone who prefers sand underfoot. If you’re searching for lakes with real beaches, Japan has a few gems worth the trip.
