Microseason: Great Rains and Sudden Downpours

Today’s weather felt like it was reading straight from the ancient almanac. Just as I stepped outside, the sky went from bright midsummer haze to a sudden, roaring torrent of rain. The kind that arrives without warning, lashing everything in its path, only to dissipate minutes later. Fittingly, today is the first day of the microseason known as Great Rains and Sudden Downpours 大雨時行 (Taiu tokidoki furu). 

"Great Rains and Sudden Downpours" is the third and final microseason of the Solar Term "Major Heat" and the 36th microseason overall. It also marks the halfway point of the 72 microseasons. As the name suggests, this microseason is characterized by sudden, heavy rainfalls. The weather can swing from bright, glaring skies to ominous downfalls in just seconds. That was exactly today: one moment calm, the next moment a wall of water.

Another interesting thing about the rain in this period is how localized it can be - lashing down in my neighborhood, while its as dry as the Sahara just a mile up the road. Today’s downpour felt like a perfect reminder of how closely these microseasons still match daily life. Even in 2026, even with weather apps and radar maps, nature still has its dramatic timing.
